Apple unveiled a wireless charging mat called AirPower in November last year as part of its plan to offer a wireless charging solution for some of its devices but it looks like it has been facing some challenges in development.
The iPhone maker was rumored to be planning on bringing the AirPower to market by March this year but that did not happen and there was also no mention of the device during this year’s WWDC event. However, new reports have suggested that the delay in the launch of the wireless charging platform was caused by challenges that Apple has been facing in the development stage.
The delays have slowed down Apple’s wireless strategy which it plans to compete with similar offerings from rivals such as Samsung. Apple announced in September last year that the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X would feature wireless charging technology. However, the company has recommended the use of wireless chargers from Mophie and Belkin. The decision to encourage the use of hardware manufactured by its competitors is quite an unusual move by Apple.
Wireless chargers are a complicated technology and some of the challenges that developers have to overcome include overheating and also the complexity involved in their circuitry. So far Apple has been tight-lipped about the development process for AirPower as is usually the case for the development of its products. The iPhone maker is also known for making sure that it does not release a product until it is sure that it is ready for the market.
The launch will be pushed back if rumors are true
If the rumors about the development issues are true, then the wireless charger will face even more delays before it is eventually made available to the masses. The AirPower wireless charger from Apple will reportedly feature the ability to charge three devices at the same time, making it exceptional compared to other wireless chargers currently available on the market. This means users will be able to charge their iPhones, AirPods and Apple Watch at the same time.
Apple also wants the devices to charge no matter where they are placed on the charging mat. Although the rumors about a launch in March were from speculators, Apple did not reveal the month or actual date for the launch. There are still a few months left in the year, meaning that there is still time for Apple to make sure that it fulfills its promise.
